Hi, my name is

Nathaniel Buck.

I am a student living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh studying Computer Science. This is my website.

What I'm Writing

The Soup Nazi Comes to Pittsburgh

Seinfeld is my favorite television show of all time, so I was naturally interested when I heard that “The Original Soupman” was coming to Pittsburgh. The Original Soupman is a franchise version of Soup Kitchen International, the now-closed New York City restaurant owned by Al Yeganeh. Al Yeganeh inspired “The Soup Nazi,” one of the most popular episodes of Seinfeld. Continue reading…

Senator Obama Visits Pitt

Today, Senator Barack Obama came to the University of Pittsburgh to address his supporters at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. After being endorsed and introduced by Senator Casey, Senator Obama spoke for nearly an hour to the sold out crowd of 2,400 people. Continue reading…

The Office: UK vs. US

If you watch television, there is a good chance that have seen The Office. The Office portrays the daily lives of the employes of the fictitious Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, which is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The television show has been adapted from the British drama sharing the same name. The British version of the show became very popular, and has also been adapted for German, French, and French Canadian audiences. Continue reading…

March Madness

March is always an exciting time for me, being a huge fan of college basketball. The NCAA Tournament is probably my favorite sporting event of the year, even toping the Superbowl (The Olympics and World Cup are up there too, but they are only every 2 and 4 years, respectively.) College basketball, to me, is unadulterated, passionate sports. It’s great to be able to watch college athletes playing for pride rather than a paycheck. Continue reading…

Simplicity & Stuff

Recently, I’ve begun to change the way I think about things, and my opinion on personal possessions. For a while, I have appreciated what some might call minimalism (when it comes to appearance of things, like computers, for example), but until now these ideas haven’t had an effect on the way I live. Here are some of my thoughts on stuff and why I’ve been trying to simplifying my possessions. Continue reading…

Internet Explorer 8 to Support Web Standards

I’m not sure if you have been following the recent buzz around IE 8, but a little while ago Microsoft announced that the next version of Internet Explorer would include version targeting.

Basically, this means that their next browser wouldn’t render websites in standards mode unless explicitly commanded, so as not to “break” old websites written with poor code. This concept goes against the ideals of Web Standards, which is why a lot of people got worked up over the issue.

Yesterday, however, Microsoft announced this:
We’ve decided that IE8 will, by default, interpret web content in the most standards compliant way it can. This decision is a change from what we’ve posted previously.
This is great news for IE 8 and Web Standards.
