Hi, my name is

Nathaniel Buck.

I am a student living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh studying Computer Science. This is my website.

An Elephant, Pictures, and a German

This post was published on February 12th, 2008 and was filed under Web Design.

This past week or so I came across some websites that I really liked, so I thought I would share them. I hope that you like them too.

Made by Elephant

Made by ElephantMade by Elephant is a design agency headed up by Tim Van Damme, and located in Machelen, Belgium. I really love the overall style of this website. It’s new and definitely very fresh. There is a good color balance, and the simple elephant-identity is very attractive.

Eric Ryan Anderson Photography

Eric Ryan Anderson PhotographyThis is the personal portfolio of freelance photographer Eric Ryan Anderson. I do like the design, but the photography is really why I’m listing this website. The quality of the photography is really superb. I love the portraits and scenic photos especially, but really there isn’t anything that I dislike.

The navigation is also very intriguing, scrolling left to right. Some may find this annoying, but I really like the setup, considering the content. Note that if you click on the pictures, the album will scroll to the right so you don’t have to drag the bottom slide bar all the way over.

David Hellmann

David HellmannFrom what I was able to extract from the German writing, David Hellmann is a web designer from Köln, Germany. The overall style and color scheme of his website is really great (although it suspiciously reminds me of Electric Pulp.) I like the technique of the semi-transparent sections over the textured background. I also enjoy the colorful and creative navigation and header. Overall, it’s a beautiful website.

  2. Its always amazing to see how people to websites. I still remember how sites used to look back in the 90s. We’ve really come along way. I’m wondering though, how David Hellmann does that transparency. Is that something handled in CSS? Simply applying an opaque value to a image?

  3. I’m wondering though, how David Hellmann does that transparency.

He uses a semi-transparent image set as the background to get that effect: http://www.davidhellmann.com/grafiken/layout/trans_dark.png.

  5. Interesting. So Nathan you seem well knowledge in this area. Let me ask ya, do you have any recommendations for a drawing program? To make graphics such as that for websites. Only thing that comes to mind for me is Gimp and I’m not sure if that’s overkill.

  6. I’ve never used Gimp. If it does the things that you need it to, then I don’t see any reason to switch to anything else, considering that it’s free.

Adobe makes the best image image-editing software around, but their prices reflect this. The Adobe Creative Suite is very expensive, even with a student discount. Though nice, their software is probably more than you (or I, or most people) need.

A new application that hit the market recently is called Pixelmator ($59). I haven’t used it yet, but it looks like it has most of the key features that you might use in Adobe products, and it’s a lot cheaper. It’s worth taking a look.

Generally, I would advise you to use whatever software fits you best in both price and functionality.
