Hi, my name is

Nathaniel Buck.

I am a student living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh studying Computer Science. This is my website.

Websites: Superawesome & Mark Boulton

This post was published on January 29th, 2008 and was filed under Web Design.

Web design is something for which I have a passion. After I finish school I would love to be able to make websites for a living, but for now it will just stay a hobby.

In an effort to have nathanielbuck.com reflect who I am and what I like, I plan on displaying nice websites that I come across. These websites will not only be aesthetically pleasing, but must also have clean, valid code, and be accessible (this mean that you can do things like resize text to accommodate those who are vision-impaired. For more on Web Accessibility, see the W3C’s website.)

Here are two websites that I came across recently and found to be particularly appealing:

Superawesome

Mark Boulton DesignSuperawesome is a web designing group from Novi Sad, Serbia.

Alright, their name is a bit cheesy, but their website is nice. When I read their slogan “We design for the Web. We’re kinda good at it.” I was compelled to prove them wrong, and tried to find something on their website that I could expose. But, after I took a look, I really couldn’t.

I like the colors, spacing, and cleanness of this website. They layout is different on just about every page, but this is done in such a way to make the content more readable and exciting. The moderate use of playful images also sets a fun, creative tone to the website.

Mark Boulton Design

Mark Boulton Design This is the person website of Mark Boulton, a designer from Cardiff, UK.

His website is simple, and has pleanty of whitespace. The typography for this website is also very good looking.

Some might call this website plain or boring, but I really like the simplicity and openness that Mark Boulton creates in his website. His website is really clean, and I appreciate that.

  1. I think its important to note that it does take more then just valid code to make a beautiful website. I personally like Mark Boulton’s design better. Its simplicity helps give a clean, sharp look.

  2. Sour Swinger,

I definitely agree with your point about valid code. When I am looking at websites I only check to see if the code is valid after I find websites that are attractive on the outside.

However, valid code is also important to me to a designer. Beautiful websites, to me, are those which are not only pretty, but those which are also usable and accessible, traits of Web Standards.

If you want to learn more about Web Standards you should read Jeffery Zeldman’s Designing With Web Standards.

  3. “Web design is something for which I have a passion.”

Since grammar is “something for which I have a passion” I felt it might be helpful to inform you that ending a sentence with a preposition is allowed. If it makes the sentence sound more natural then it is perfectly acceptable to do. As Winston Churchill said about the issue, “That is the sort of thing up with which I will not put!”

@Sour Swinger: Web standards are very important. In the long run they will be the reason that more people are able to create beautiful websites that everyone can enjoy.

The examples chosen were interesting. I love the Mark Boulton site.

  4. Justin,

Thank you for the informative literary tip. Grammatical lessons are “something for which I am always looking.”

Really though, it’s good to know when breaking a literary “rule” is acceptable, but there is nothing wrong with formality in writing, I’d say.
